Abstract

Taking four recent projects: an iPod touch/iPhone tour for Tate Liverpool’s Klimt show, the videopodcast series TateShots, a group of short films for Tate Modern’s ‘Street Art’ exhibition, and Tate Modern's 'Smart' Multimedia Tour for student groups, Jane offers a whirlwind tour of how Tate is maximising its digital content across a range of platforms, from handheld tours within Tate’s galleries and mobile experiences beyond the museum’s walls, to more ambitious broadcasting plans for online and terrestrial channels. The fundamental message, as barriers for entry to the realm of digital production are lowered, is that museums should seize the opportunity to control their own content, and consider cross-platforming at the outset.
