Keynote Presentation: Nik Honeysett

Abstract

In 2005 the Getty launched a wireless handheld device for its visiting public. The device was a resource for the entire collection on view, providing interpretive content, images, audio tours, wayfinding and daily event and exhibition information delivered over the network. The device was also context-aware using location sensing to deliver content based on the gallery in which the user was standing. Shortly after it launched, the device was removed from operation due to operational and technical challenges. What happened and what did the Getty learn from this experience?
